Smallstep offers both open-source and cloud-platform self-service subscriptions as well. While open source doesn't require an up-front purchase, the time and effort can impact opportunity cost.
Smallstep `step-ca` is open-source and falls under the Apache 2.0 license for usage. We also offer hosted and on-premises platforms that are licensed as a subscription. Our cloud platform, which is built on top of step-ca, provides a unique framework and a user-friendly experience that goes beyond what can be achieved with a do-it-yourself solution. However, determining the actual cost is not as straightforward as choosing between free or subscription, as the level of effort (and opportunity cost) is an important factor to consider.
Which should you use?
If you're unsure whether to choose the open-source option or Smallstep Certificate Manager, we're here to help. We can discuss the amount of work required to deploy the open-source solution and explain why the hosted option may or may not be the best fit for your project or effort.
If you're considering which option to go with, feel free to bring us into the conversation.
